I don’t usually get political on this blog, and I’m not going to do anything partisan in this Independence Day post. But looking around at what’s going on in this country at the moment, I realize how fragile this American Dream has become.
The country is more polarized than we’ve seen for decades, and there’s a level of economic class war that’s unprecedented in my lifetime.
There’s still room for those who dare greatly to succeed, but that success is never guaranteed.
We can say the same of those visionary colonists who struggled to throw off the reins of a distant monarchy more than two centuries ago. They dared greatly, but their success wasn’t certain by any means.
And just like those freedom-loving colonists, we’re all in this together, whether it’s pursuing success or helping pull our country back together. Benjamin Franklin said it best: “We must, indeed, hang together or we shall, most assuredly, hang separately.”
On this Independence Day, let’s remember that freedom requires both commitment and effort. It requires all of us to keep this fragile dream alive.
I wish you and yours a happy and thoughtful Fourth of July.
